About John Galsworthy

John Galsworthy was born in 1867, in Kingston, England. The son of a wealthy shipping magnate he was educated at Harrow and then went on to read law at New College, Oxford University. Although his heart was not in the law he qualified as a barrister and was called to the bar in 1890. However as soon as the legal training was finished he abandoned the law and took a job travelling abroad looking after the families’ shipping business interests. During this time he met a young Polish Merchant Seaman called Joseph Conrad. The pair met up on a ship moored in Adelaide harbour in Australia, and having established that they both preferred writing to sailing, struck up a strong friendship. It was following his time with Conrad that Galsworthy returned to London to begin his writing career.
Best known for his novels and in particular The Forsyte Saga, these deal with class and the suffocating social codes of the day.
